“Your work just makes me happy.”

That was the phrase of the evening. Said quietly in front of a canvas, said again over a cocktail, said on the way out the door. People came ready to experience the art and see what it brought up for them, and that is what it brought up.
The August Soirée gathered so many different people into one room for a night of art, cocktails, music, food and conversation. As everyone moved through the work, an optimism took hold — not only for the paintings but for the feeling of being lifted by color and movement, together, on a summer night. I am grateful to say that several pieces have since found their permanent homes, and that this circle of art lovers and collectors keeps widening in ways I never take for granted.
‍

Something I hadn’t seen before.

In the week after, as I lined up pieces to travel to their new spaces, I noticed it. Intoxication, painted this year, leaning against a piece I made more than fifteen years ago. The same pinks, the same warm neutrals, the same green moving underneath. Fifteen years apart and they could have been painted in the same week. It seems the work has been circling back to something it already knew.

‍

I’m in New York for the next few weeks, walking The Armory Show, Independent, and a long list of gallery openings, taking in whatever I need to bring back into the studio this fall.
As always, if there’s a piece you’d like to know more about, simply reply to this note. And if you know someone who might like to be here, please pass it along.

LATELY, I’VE BEEN THINKING…

“Color has a long memory. It remembers where it came from long before I do.”
