Designing With Art: The Power of Placement

Welcome back to my studio!
In this issue, I want to share a little bit of my process — not just as a painter, but as a designer who’s spent years helping people create spaces that feel personal, beautiful, and alive.
When I work with clients, whether on a private commission or through art advising, we always begin with the same conversation: How do you want your space to feel?

How to Choose The Right Art For Your Space:

The right piece of art does more than fill a wall — it transforms the atmosphere you live in every single day. Over the years, I’ve developed a few simple principles that guide me in both my own home and when working with collectors:

Start With The Energy

Before you think about color or size, think about feeling. Do you want the space to feel:
Light and open?
Warm and intimate?
Bold and energized?
Calm and contemplative?
In the room pictured here, I chose my painting Work Of A Life So Far Lived (2013) as the focal point. Its vibrant, layered movement brings energy into the space, but the softer pinks and yellows balance it with warmth and optimism — perfect for a room meant for both conversation and relaxation.

Let Scale Anchor The Space

Scale is powerful. Large-scale work, like Work Of A Life So Far Lived, has the ability to completely anchor a room. It becomes the visual center of gravity, and everything else can be designed around it — furniture, lighting, even conversation. In smaller spaces, a bold large piece can actually make the room feel bigger by giving it a strong point of focus. Make It Personal. Art should reflect you.
When I advise clients, I’m not looking for something that simply “matches.” I’m looking for the piece that feels like it belongs to their story — work that they connect to emotionally, energetically, and intuitively. The best art invites you in every time you enter the room. It becomes part of your daily rhythm.
If you’re curious about finding the right piece for your space — whether it’s an existing work, a private commission, or curated advising — I’d love to help. Click here to inquire.

Until next time,
